The Renegades Leave Marvel Stadium
One of the most significant news about stadiums is connected with the “Melbourne Renegades” team. The club terminated its 15-year partnership with Marvel Stadium and will play its home matches at the MCG and Junction Oval (two matches at each), along with the opening match against Perth Scorchers in Chennai. This new strategy may revolutionize the club’s fan base and identity.
Big Rule Changes Ahead of BBL|16
The league has decided to change how teams are constructed. This is important because it will influence which stars emerge, and where.
1. Players drafted from overseas have been scrapped, with the draft itself being abolished. The draft has been abolished with the league reverting to an open market system, with clubs free to pursue overseas players, as was the case before the 2022 draft.
2. Three overseas players per club, with no minimum. There is no longer a minimum number of overseas players for each team, and a maximum of three per club.
3. A marquee player rule. A marquee player rule will be introduced for BBL|16. Check back soon for the updated playing conditions, which will outline the requirements and parameters for the marquee player rule for the upcoming season. Conditions are expected to change slightly for the new season.
4. New contract rules. The salary rules include reducing the minimum number of marquee players from six to three, while the total salary of the six highest-paid players cannot exceed $1.7 million.
As a whole, these changes give more flexibility to clubs and create more avenues for superstar players to join the league.
BBL 2026-27 Signings and Squad Updates
Since the draft was called off, the signing window has been a busy place. Here are the notable moves to date, by club.
Adelaide Strikers: The Stokes Factor
Ben Stokes has signed with Adelaide Strikers for the BBL | 16 campaign, reuniting with coach Tim Paine. Another overseas recruit for the Adelaide Strikers includes New Zealand’s Mark Chapman. Stokes’ return to the Big Bash after more than a decade makes him a marquee name, and one of the most anticipated players of the competition.
Perth Scorchers: New Opener For The Champions
The Scorchers lost their big-hitting campaigner Finn Allen, but the addition of Englishman Zak Crawley to the team will surely fill the void left by Allen. Zak Crawley has signed a one-year contract with Perth in the latest Big Bash League. The left-hander earlier played for the Hurricanes in the 2022-23 BBL season and is set to join up with his English teammate, leg-spinner Calvin Harrison, who signed with the Scorchers in November. The newcomers will play alongside the squad’s leaders, including Mitch Marsh, Ashton Agar, Cooper Connolly, Aaron Hardie, Lance Morris, and young Mahli Beardman, under the supervision of coach Adam Voges.
Sydney Sixers
Steve Smith has confirmed his participation for the BBL|16 season, as has Sean Abbott, the most successful bowler in the men's tournament. The Sixers finished second last season and have also signed Ollie Davies from the Thunder.
Sydney Thunder
David Warner and leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha are on the Thunder's squad, so the team has lots of experience and variety in wrist-spin styles.
Melbourne Stars
Jamie Overton is reportedly set to join the Stars, bolstering their pace and batting depth. The Stars have also retained Haris Rauf and Sam Harper, from last season's squad.
Hobart Hurricanes
A source has reported that leg-spinner Adam Zampa has signed with Hobart. This information should be regarded as a report move until the club confirms it. The Hurricanes also have the tactical brain of Ricky Ponting, the club's head of strategy.
Melbourne Renegades
Reports reveal that the English veteran Jonny Bairstow has signed up with the Renegades as a wicketkeeper-batsman, replacing Tim Seifert. He is expected to be available for the entire BBL|16 season. While those monitoring the team’s player list are not fully clear on the matter, it is best you double-check the details before publishing any news about the club.
Still to Land?
Several big names were still to find a club at the time of writing. Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Starc were among the stars yet to find a club, and reports also mention Josh Inglis and Pat Cummins, and other sources mention Josh Inglis and Pat Cummins. More major news is expected before December.
Last Season's Story: Why the Scorchers Are the Team to Beat
To understand what BBL|16 is about, you need to know about the final of BBL|15. Perth Scorchers defeated Sydney Sixers by six wickets in the final on 25 January 2026 to win their sixth title.
Some other stats from the previous season include:
Number of matches: 44
Attendance: A massive 1,088,924 fans turned up to see the matches, with an average attendance of 24,748 per match.
Player of the series: Sam Harper (Melbourne Stars)
Most runs: Finn Allen (466)
Most wickets: Haris Rauf (20)
It was the Hobart Hurricanes who accounted for Sydney Thunder by seven wickets in the final of the BBL|14. Brisbane Heat won the title in BBL|13 (2023-24), while Perth Scorchers are the current champions after their BBL|15 win. It will be fascinating to see who will win the title this season. After all, it is one of the most exciting competitions in world cricket.
Who Could Win BBL|16? Five Storylines to Watch
These are opinions, not facts, but they're still worth thinking about.
The Scorchers' chances of back-to-back titles are not looking good. Losing Allen is a blow, but Crawley, Marsh and Agar provide solidity in the top order.
Does Stokes really turn the Strikers? One superstar can make all the difference and Adelaide's crowds will flock to the game.
Is the Renegades' new home an advantage? Playing two games each at the MCG and Junction Oval, plus an opener in Chennai is an odd way to set up a season.
How will the new rules change things? The marquee player rule and the open overseas market are sure to have an impact.
Will the unsigned stars still sign? Last minute deals could upset the apple cart.
